About Me

I am a relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants and was profoundly blessed to have a role in the team’s 2010 World Series victory.  I am also Christian, evangelist, and high-octane philanthropist.  In 2011 the Not For Sale Campaign honored me with the opportunity to serve as of its first Ambassadors to Combat Slavery, along with Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.  My  work with Not For Sale has earned me nominations for a variety of prestigious awards, including the Roberto Clemente Award and the Jefferson Award for Public Service.

Along with my work raising funds and awareness on behalf of Not For Sale, I support Something to Eat, the Global Orphan Project, Living Water International, and One World Futbol through my youth ministry, Generation Alive.  I blog on Christian discipleship and tweet daily about global action to help the poor.

I’m working to stir a movement by raising the hearts of people in response to God’s call to end injustice everywhere. I know we can do it.  If God shows you a problem, he also shows you how to fix it.  Join me in making this movement real.

Jeremy, I really enjoy what you are doing and thank you for doing it.

I pray for more athletes like yourself who can reach those who others cannot. I am a Pastor and work with athletes over the hill from the Bay at the University of Nevada (Reno) through 925 athletic ministries and would love to pick your brain sometime about how to further connect the athletes to injustice issues and make this movement real.

      james,

thanks for writing and thanks for the encouragement. First thing I would do is go to http://www.notforsalecampaign.org there is a tab that says “take action” then go to the next tab that says “who are you” and then there is another tab from there that says “athlete”. it puts you into the free2play site of the program and it gives cool ideas for athletes.

Thanks for being so forthcoming about your dedication to your faith, and especially to committing yourself to working with the community. To a lot of kids (and many of us “adults”), you’re a celebrity – so to have the chance to share a common belief means the world. It’s amazing whenever anyone can share so much about who he really is, without pretense or ego.

You are truly inspirational, both on and off the field.

    Jeremy,

You are an inspiration. I watch you with the Giants all the time, but had NO IDEA about your Faith and outreach, wonderful. Congrats on the birth of your son. I pray for more athletes as yourself to be a role model for aspiring young athletes.

thank you for being such an inspiration to many of us. there aren’t many heroes out there these days….kids (and adults) need someone to look up to.

keep doing what you are doing…if you believe, it will happen.

    Jeremy,

Thank you for being an example to our kids. You are not only a role model for kids but also to us adults because you are living what you believe. I’m a big time Giants fan but sometimes I separate sports from faith and seeing your work has changed that for me.

    Blessings,

    Jeremy,
I just met with Tim Elmore the other day about his Habitudes series for athletes. I live in Atlanta and I’m a pitcher in the Mets organization. He wanted to pick my brain about Baseball and Christ (and where they intersect). He told me about ya’lls relationship and about your testimony, and it really encouraged me in my walk. Life in the Minor Leagues can be tough, as you know, but seeing men like you and your faith gives me hope. I’d love to talk with you sometime and get some wisdom about Baseball, marriage, family, faith, etc. I just watched a video with you and Brian Wilson sharing about what God’s done in your lives…it’s just good to know that there are guys like y’all in the league!

I’ll be praying for you guys this season (even if you’re playing the Mets). – CM

    Hey Jeremy,
I’ve been hanging out at spring training this week and reminded myself that I needed to update the Giants-I-Follow-On-Twitter list. You were one of the guys that had slipped through my twitter radar and dang am I sad about that now. I am floored and absolutely thrilled reading through your blog. Your heart is amazing. And you love a ridiculous amount of the same things God’s put in my heart to love. Uganda and youth, specifically.
I just wanted to pass it your way that I’ve been blessed to stumble onto your blog in a completely baseball related way and find so so much more than what I was looking for. Thanks for being who you are, doing what you do, and sharing so excitedly why you do it and who you ultimately do it for. You and the rest of the SF boys are in my prayers and I’m stoked to know you and your relationship with Jesus are a part of the baseball team I’ve been raised on loving. God’s got a hold of you, and it’s just awesome.

    jeremy,

i really appreciated your talk you gave to the fans last night at the game. i wasn’t sure what the vibe was going to be at the game after what happened down in los angeles. what you said helped shape the entire evening in the crowd. as you were talking, my wife leaned over to me and she said you sounded like you were a christian and how cool to have players step up like that. then i told her about your blog and your ministries and she was really encouraged.

thank you for being a blessing and a leader, for expanding the kingdom of god with the gifts and talents that you have been uniquely given. thank you for being someone that us youth pastors can point to as an example of what it looks like to live a life surrendered to christ in whatever profession you are called.

    peace!

    Jeremy,

I am a huge Giants fan and I knew you were a man of faith. I was so excited when our youth pastor showed this bio today in our youth service and played a video about your passion on ending slavery. It is great for our youth to see the the examples of young men such as yourself putting God first, and using your time, talents and resources for the kingdom. God Bless you and the work that you are doing and the love in your heart for Jesus and others.

Jeremy, what you are doing is amazing to me and very inspiring. I am a huge baseball fan and also play baseball and football at my highschool. You show me that it is possible to show your faith while being an athlete. I sometimes struggle with my faith when I am with my teamates and have trouble being a good influence.I recently started reading your blogs and I love them and look forward to them. You show me that it is possible to be a man of god and a light to everyone. God bless you

    Jeremy!

I just wanted to write and say that I saw on YouTube the Fellowship event that you help create after one of the Giant games in 2011. As a huge Giants fan I tend to watch many things related to the Giants and listened to you speak. You speak with such power and passion and humor that it has caused me to re-evaluate my own beliefs about God and being positive about life’s events. I have such respect for the way you see life and others who need our help. Truly an inspiration. I go to church every Sunday but am often cynical about those who profess to be Christian but seem filled anger toward so many others who need help. They go to church on Sunday but then ignore or worse insult the homeless who need help the next day. Jesus’ face is in those who need our help. Your faith is strong and passionate and your belief and actions show me that true Christianity is at work in this world. Your words during that Fellowship meeting have stayed with me and I try to keep them in my heart during many difficult times at work. I always have thought that God tries to find a way to speak to you and when you don’t or won’t listen to him where he would usually find you He will find another way to speak to you. You have been the way that God has found to speak to me. Thank you.

Praise God! Thank you for being on fire for Jesus. We were just introduced to your blog today and I read it to my nine year old (minus a few words). Hes excited to read the rest on Friday. He wants to play for the Giants, (every little boys dream) and I always tell him only if its Gods will and you have to glorify the Lord. We talk about ways he can do that… like starting a baseball VBS camp for kids, or giving God the glory after wins.

Thank you for being an example of a baseball player who lives out his faith and has a lifestyle of Jesus.

Very good, keep up the work!

I have struggled through my own Christian walk but with help and prayer I have found a way to a better life. Baseball has been a life saver for me. I used to follow the Giants in the 80′s, but slowly lost interest for many reasons, though the biggest reason was it was really hard to follow the team living in Regina, Saskatchewan Canada.

Three years ago, after moving to a smaller town with my husband, the baseball itch came back. I follow the Giants on the internet. With the move to Waldheim, Saskatchewan came an introduction to Jesus. Though raised Anglican, church meant nothing to me. The first Sunday I attended in Waldheim I saw Jesus. It was great!

I found your blogs toughing and full of life. I thank you for this.

Always good to see someone with a public platform using it to be a witness for Christ. My son was at a Giant’s spring training game on Thursday. We’ve been Giant fans for a long time, and knowing that you are a believer who has a heart for the world and the hurting gives us one more reason to cheer you on.
I hope you have a great season, and that you are able to use the public forum the Lord has given you for his glory!

    Jeremy-

I wanted to extend a sincere “thank you” after my recent trip to Spring Training. I was really impressed by the time you took to sign autographs for the many fans (including a bunch of kids) one of whom was my 13 year old daughter. She waited patiently for an hour and a half and yours was her only autograph. I realize you could have done a lot of other things with your time, but you made our first trip to Spring Training special. You also made a big impact with all the other kids too. Finally, I wanted to let you know how impressed I was by your presence escorting Brian Stowe’s son to throw out the first pitch for Friday’s Home Opener. Thanks for going out of your way to make people’s lives better.

    Dear Jeremy Affeldt,
As students at St. Ignatius College Preparatory we are writing to thank you for all of your hard work fighting against human trafficking. We would like to applaud your work as the ambassador of Free2Play. Your pledge to Not For Sale to make a donation for every strike has illustrated to the Bay Area that you not only stick to your word but also are truly dedicated to the cause.
When a group of fellow students and I were assigned to study and present on human trafficking to our religion class, we were horrified. We were outraged that men, women, and children were being so taken advantage of and that the issue was so close to home. However, after researching advocates of Not For Sale and Free2Play we were so glad to learn about al of your contributions to ending the atrocities.
Our group was able to look at what you have accomplished and are still working on to decide how we think we can make the situation better. For example, we decided that the firsts steps in approaching the issue are simply to educate yourself and others around you about what is happening. When you spread awareness you inspire others to make changes as well. We want our local communities to support Not For Sale and Free2Play and even lobby local politicians to make changes in policies in connection with human trafficking. Finally, we hope that governments around the world will be influenced to make changes, by people like you and our community at St. Ignatius, to help struggling areas by providing jobs, security, and educational and social opportunities to reduce their vulnerability to trafficking.
It is a true comfort to know that there are heroes like you within our own city. We thank you for your generous contributions of time, money, support, and dedication to ending human trafficking and we look forward to hearing about the good we know you will be doing in the future.
    Sincerely,
Ana, Jason, Rocky, and Natalia: SI Class of ’13

    Jeremy,

Haven’t had the chance to thank you quite yet for all you have done back here at home. Thanks for sponsoring our Storm team this season. I have been coaching for 6 years now and have always been involved with kids that are “less” fortunate. It was a privilege to be a part of Generation Alive and an even bigger blessing to be involved with a greater cause. Something to Eat is an inspiring cause that has kick started many ideas for the future. The Generation Alive Storm Pony Baseball team will continue to do their part in helping others. Again, thanks for all you do and it was my privilege to be the head coach of some amazing young men. Good luck to you this October.

    Jeremy,

I was watching Game 4 last night. You came in and did an amazing job! When you got that pop up and then were taken out the TV zoomed in on you as you were leaving the field and you glanced up and said “Thank you, Father”. It was an amazing sight to see with the world watching on the games biggest stage you thanking our Father! I had to go show my wife. She isn’t the biggest baseball fan but we all are a HUGE fan of you. My wife went to middle school with you at Merced Christian in Merced CA, where we both live now. She showed me her yearbooks and i would post some pics of your 7th and 8th grade years on here but i don’t see a way to post pictures.

My 9 year old son just started playing baseball this year. He plays lots of sports but he is really taking to baseball and even started pitching. I am thankful to have MLB players like you out there as role models for my son to see growing up.

On a side note, I’m sure you know Doug Fister is from Merced as well. Did you have any conversations with him about both living is such a small area and both making it to the World Series. Seems a good amount of pitchers have come from or lived in this small town. Also Brian Fuentez is from this town.

Congratulations on your 2nd World Series win and hopefully many more.
